Quizvraag: welke Europeanen werkten al samen met ronkende namen als Jesse Hugues, Brant Bjork, Chris Goss én Dave Catching? Hulk verdorie! Belgen! De band die, misschien ook door u, beste lezer, lang straal werd genegeerd, mocht voor hun laatste langspeler ‘Cowboy Coffee & Burned Knives’ een tijd lang in de Californische Rancho de la Luna studio resideren, smeedde er vriendschaps- en samenwerkingsbanden met bovenstaande fijne lui en verliet het ondertussen legendarische complex met een eye-opener van een plaat. De bonte mix van traditionele hardrock en zandspuitende stoner sloeg niet alleen omwille van chauvinistische redenen aan in ons landje – hoewel Vlaanderen alwéér achterbleef, maar ook door de internationale klasse die het drietal tentoonspreidde. Kwaliteit die zich ook een weg baande naar alle podia die het drietal bestormde, want live gaat Hulk steeds voor fikse okselvijvers en gekneusde nekwervels. Terwijl de band de laatste hand legt aan de plaat die hen definitief op de kaart moet zetten, schotelen ze ons met ‘The Codeine Sessions’ een extended player voor die de honger nog wat aanscherpt.
Het is niet dat we middels deze ep de kans krijgen om een dieper inzicht in het drietal te verwerven, want ook dit tussendoortje beschikt over een lijst gastmuzikanten waar menige gretige namedropper groen van uitslaat. Bjork, Hugues, Catching en Goss tekenen weer present, en hoewel hun aanwezigheid een genuanceerd oordeel van de werkelijke kwaliteiten en progressie van Hullk in de weg staat, zorgt het hele gezelschap samen voor een leuk kwartiertje muziek. Het enige nummer waarin de band alleen ten oorlog trekt, ‘Keep Talking’, doet vermoeden dat de drievuldigheid er qua strakheid en rock ‘n’ roll attitude alleen maar op vooruit is gegaan. Zwier het vurigste van Led Zeppelin in de wok, gooi er een serieuze schep AC/DC bovenop en je hebt ongeveer een idee van hoe dit korte pareltje uw dierbare oorschelpen in de as legt. Jesse Hugues, een man die we zelfs bij het übercoole Eagles of Death Metal maar matig amusant vinden, kan ons wél bekoren tijdens ‘Gimme Some Skin’, waar zijn corny oehoehs, huhs en gilletjes beste vriendjes worden met het vurige gitaarwerk.
Terwijl we ons blijven afvragen wat – behalve de vanuit marketingstandpunt dankbare credit – de meerwaarde van Brant Bjork voor ‘Seducer’ is, en wetende dat het nummer ook al als hidden track op ‘Cowboy Coffee & Burned Knives’ stond, trekken we ons op aan het heerlijke baslijntje en het vlot meegrombare refrein, dat zich als een hongerige bloedzuiger in de geheugenkwab vastzet. Toch liever ‘Electricitat’, met gezandstraalde riffs bezwangerde rock ‘n’ roll met een hoofdrol voor Dave Catching, de man achter de roemruchte ‘Desert Sessions’ en de brave peer die Hulk voor het internationale voetlicht bracht. Het afsluitende ‘Scary Song’ jaagt u, ondanks de veelbelovende titel, niét van pure horreur de gordijnen in, maar draagt wel de onmiskenbare stempel van Chris Goss, die met zijn Masters of Reality wel meer dergelijke etherische, zompige bluesrocknummers op zijn actief heeft staan.
‘The Codeine Sessions’ is het schoolvoorbeeld van een zoethoudertje waar we weinig wijzer van worden. De gasten zijn te prominent aanwezig om er nog een volbloed Hulk-productie in te horen, maar voor zij die reikhalzend uitkijken naar de volgende langspeler van dit – we kunnen het niet genoeg benadrukken – Belgische drietal, biedt dit schijfje op de kop af 17 minuten aangenaam tijdverdrijf. Hopelijk kunnen we de van de pot gerukte rock ‘n’ roll superlatieven die we in dode momenten wel eens plegen te verzamelen van stal halen eens H(ulk)-day naderbij komt.
HULK was born in the year 2000. At that time, the group’s goal was to compose original songs while remaining faithful to major influences like blues, rock’n’roll, soul, hard rock and punk, which marked them very deeply. Just to name a few : Elvis, MC5, AC/DC, Marvin Gaye, The Damned, Aerosmith, The Stooges, Blondie, Black Sabbath…
In Janauary 2002, they record « Party Time » with Marc-François (Vaya con Dios, Zita Swoon …). Almost unknown in Belgium, their story really begins in The Netherlands. The album, distributed by Distrisound, is going to seduce the Dutch press which cannot stop praising on their subject

Around fifty dates, one after the other, have been scheduled in The Netherlands, in places like Paradiso, Effenaar, Patronaat, 013, Paaspop, Eurosonic …
They share the scene with groups like Monster Magnet, Mondo Generator, Slade, Brant Bjork,MC5, The Stooges, QotSA and also Franz Ferdinand who performs the first part of their concert before their success as known today.
Thanks to Eurosonic, where they performed an impeccable show, HULK will be noticed and programmed across The Channel, in the legendary John Peel Show (BBC)... but also on XFM and other English radios.
Then a series of enthusiastic articles are published in the British press. On our side, the clip intoxicated is diffused on plug TV, MCM and MTV and they finally start to perform in Belgian clubs.
After being approached by the combo US the Bellrays who after a joint show proposes them to produce their next album, it is finally in September 2004 that they begin the recording of their album “cowboy coffee & burned knifes” in the legendary Rancho of Luna in California where namely have also recorded : PJ Harvey, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, QotSA and the series Serves sessions… The album is produced by David Catching (QotSA, Mondo Generator, Earthlings) and Mathias Schneeberger. This collaboration was made possible thanks to the meeting between HULK and David Catching who was thrilled by the trio’s performances in live during their Dutch tour.
On these fourteen titles, where the group draws its inspiration in the deepest roots of rock'n'roll with the arrogance of punk and the sonic power of hard rock of the seventies, prestigious guests such as Chriss Goss, Jesse Hughes, David Catching, Brant Bjork and Mathias Schneeberger take part on the album. The album comes out in the end of January 2005 through the Dutch label Suburban. Dates are booked one after the other and the trio’s performances describe their talent as energetic, rock’n' roll and powerful.
This tour will take them through the Netherlands and Germany but also to Belgium where the recognition so long awaited at home finally shows up. The French-speaking press as well as the Dutch-speaking press, is unanimous ; the sales are more than satisfactory and it is during the summer 2005 that they are invited to perform in several prestigious festivals of the kingdom: Pukkelpop, Dour, Herk Rock'n'roll, Lokerse Feesten, Fest in' T Park...
In November 2005 they confirm the Belgian test by filling only by themselves the seats of « l’orangerie du Botanique » in Brussels (more than 500 tickets sold). The show is fantastic and the public happily surprised. The concert will be filmed by the producer Marco Laguna, from Brussels. At the same time the album comes out in England, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Germany, Greece and France... Journalists from the famous Dutch magazine OOR, will also write good critics about them, and they will be classified in the top 10 of the best albums of the year... the only Belgian album with the classification! Will follow then in spring 2006, a tour in Belgian clubs (Antwerp, Liege, Mons, Charleroi, Bruges, Leuwen...)
Following divergences on the development of the trio by their label, HULK decides to leave Dutch suburban and its management. After finding a new Belgian management they lock themselves up in studio to compose new pieces with the real desire to progress and go ahead. They really want to compose more personal songs : mad, urgent but with a melody at the same time.
About fifteen titles are ready and several labels are interested by their compositions. It is finally with the Brussels label BANG! that they decide to combine their forces for the future. To celebrate the signature, they decide to produce a maxi with 5 titles also recorded at the Rancho of Luna studio in the US with guests on each title. This maxi which will be distributed in a limited edition (1000 numbered copies) will be accompanied by two exclusive clips produced by Marco Laguna.
They decide to stop the concerts despite of proposals for a tour in Germany, Spain and Italy in order to record their new album during this summer 2006. The album is scheduled to come out during this winter...
